I went into listening to this having never heard JoVia before, nor had I heard any of the guest artists on here (aside from Kafele who was featured on a previous album I reviewed), but man there are some great artists on here, not least of which is the woman of the hour herself, JoVia.
The musical styles of this album alternated between soulfully jazzy to reggae to moments that hearken back to old school jazz, and all the while with this really nice percussion throughout.
The overall vibe this was at times relaxing and hypnotic, such as on the great track "Think Twice" feat. Phoenix, and at other times upbeat and make-you-wanna-get-up-and-dance inducing such as the fantastic "Head Games" featuring Pathe Jassi, Fred Jackson and Kafele. And don't even get me started on the absolute fire that is Miss Con Strued with emcee S.M. featured. I'm definitely looking for more music from S.M. after hearing that.
It's amazing how we sometimes get caught up in the music that is mass produced and delivered to us via the radio and magazines and whatnot, and often there are some diamonds in the rough, so to speak, that are criminally under represented and under appreciated.
This is another album that was pointed out to me by DJ Come of Age and once again I have to say that the man knows his indie soul music. His track record speaks for itself! If you want to hear more great positive music that is off the radar, so to speak, check out DJ COA's podcast "Soul Music Of The World" for yourself and see what I mean.
Stay tuned because I have several more indie soul music to review in the coming weeks, and months. So if that's the type of music you like, you definitely don't wanna go anywhere.
